Well, I'm sure that you've all noticed it's March - and it's also reading month! Hence, our annual Dr. Seuss video! Thanks to all of the Who's who participated! What else is going on this month to celebrate??
Well, for the first time ever, I'm trying out a student-staff book club. It will be Wednesday, March 21st after school, and we will be reading The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. I'm trying to build our reading culture in the building, so we'll see how this goes! Any and all are welcome to participate! The book isn't horribly long, and is a humorous historical fiction novel (plus, the author is from Michigan - cool)! If you're joining us, please encourage your students to join us as well! You never know if something will work until you try, right?
Battle of the Books is launching this month, with the actual battle taking place on April 27th during first and second hours in the media center. Students who choose to participate will be reading seven books of varying genres as team, and will then participate in a Quiz Bowl-style competition with questions about the books. Last year we had twelve teams, and it was a blast! This event is co-sponsored with the Brighton District Library. To find out more about Battle of the Books, you can check out my video, which is linked below (so you know what you're getting into, it's around 3 minutes). I'll take all the publicity I can get, so please pump this up for your students! ELA teachers will be showing the video in their classes - thanks ELA folks!
A great big thank-you to Molly, who has organized having Seuss-inspired spirit Fridays all this month! Check out Sally's daily announcements so you're on top of what's going on! Also...did you all see the awesome balloon arch that Molly's marketing students put together? How fun! And good for so much more than Seuss in the future. :-)
An interactive display will be coming to the media center, with popular books where students can annotate their thoughts, so they can see how others "talk to the text." We will also be making use of the TV in the media center to display student book reviews.
But wait, you say, what about an author visit? This month was so busy and short, that we actually decided it would be best to have our author visit on Friday, April 6th. We're very excited to have Barbara Witteman, who is a professional non-fiction writer and researcher, coming to visit us. She will be presenting on an hourly basis in the media center.

I know it's a busy month, but we're prepared to make it a fun one here in the library media center!
